Briefly Explanation About Quantity Surveyor Duties in Pre-Contract Stage




Hello Everyone; Today I will give you briefly explanation about Quantity Surveyors duties in Pre-Contract Stage. In Pre-Contract Stage we can divide the Quantity Surveyors duties in two categories.
  1. The duties of Clients/ Consultant Quantity Surveyor.
  2. The duties of Contractor Quantity Surveyor.


Activities related to the Client/ Consultant Quantity Surveyor.

> Inspect the site and prepare site visit report

Prepare preliminary Project estimate.

Make aware the designer about the cost plan

Obtain the final design from the Designer

Compare final design with the basic cost plan

Taking off quantities of construction activities from the drawing

Prepare bill of quantities

Calculate unit rate for the construction activities to the B.O.Q.

Obtain Information from materiel suppliers and suppliers of specialized services for preparation of prices

Suggest alternative to the designer on the construction components which exceed the preliminary cost

Attend to the pre bid meeting

Provide information for addendum

Evaluate the bids received with the recommendation of the designer

Prepare bid evaluation reports

Obtain the constant of the selected bidder on the revised rates

Prepare contract agreement for signing.

Give awareness on the project cost estimate prepared by the consultant

Decide suitable contract method with the consultant of the client

Prepare preambles and specifications required for pricing the bidding documents

Calculate input percentage of materials and manpower for bidding documents

Obtain the approval from the client for the procurement method

Prepare bid invitation



Activities related to the contractors quantity surveyor. 

Analyze bid invitations

Clarify any doubts in the bid invitation from the client/ consultant

> Examine bidding documents

> List out doubts in the bidding documents

> Inform any quarries in the bidding documents to the client/consultant

> Inspect work site with the officers of client/consultant

> Examine quantities/ specifications in the bill of quantities with the drawing

> Attend pre-bid meeting

> Analyze work items of the Bill of Quantities

> Evaluate quotations received from the suppliers of specified services /goods

> Prepared basic cost of work items

> Prepare overhead and profit percentage

> Obtain details on pre-qualification and collect other documents for the bidding

> Submit the relevant details of security bond/guarantees to the relevant officer

> Submit Bidding document in time
