What is scaffolding?

Scaffolding can be a temporary structure to support construct building/ structure also workmen used it as a platform to hold on the development works.

Normally, type of scaffolding can be varied with the type of construction work. It should be stable and powerful to support workmen and other construction material placed there on. Now i think you have an clear picture about,

what is scaffolding?

Scaffolding Definition

In construction industry, there are lot of definition for term of scaffolding.

Scaffolding can be a temporary structure build by rigger/ labour to support difference kind of construction work in ongoing construction project.

Mostly, scaffolding is formed by stainless steel, wood, aluminum, bamboo, etc.

What are the component of scaffolding?

In high rise building, scaffolding can be a complex structure, to erection scaffolding in high rise building (even low rise building) it would be a reason to spend more cost, time and labour etc.

That kind of complex structure combine with lot of component like below image.

Types of Scaffolding

Following are the various type of scaffolding in construction,

  1. Single scaffolding
  2. Double scaffolding
  3. Cantilever scaffolding
  4. Suspended scaffolding
  5. Trestle scaffolding
  6. Steel scaffolding
  7. Patented scaffolding

1. Single Scaffolding

Single scaffolding is usually used for brick masonry and is additionally called as brick layer’s scaffolding. Single scaffolding consists of standards, ledgers, putlogs etc., which is parallel to the wall at a distance of about 1.2 m. Distance between the standards is about 2 to 2.5 m. Ledgers connect the standards at vertical interval of 1.2 to 1.5 m. Putlogs are taken out from the opening left within the wall to at least one end of the ledgers. Putlogs are placed at an interval of 1.2 to 1.5 m.

2. Double Scaffolding

Double Scaffolding is usually used for stone masonry so, it's also called as mason’s scaffolding. In stone walls, it'shard to form holes within the wall to support putlogs. So, two rows of scaffolding is made to form it strong. the primary row is 20 – 30 cm faraway from the wall and therefore the other one is 1m faraway from the primary row. Then putlogs are placed which are supported by the both frames. to form it more strong rakers and cross braces are provided. this is often also called as independent scaffolding.

3. Cantilever Scaffolding

This a kind of scaffolding during which the standards are supported on series of needles and these needles are taken out through holes within the wall. this is often called single frame type scaffolding. within the other type needles are strutted inside the floors through the openings and this is often called independent or double frame type scaffolding. Care should be taken while construction of cantilever scaffolding.

Generally cantilever scaffolding are used under conditions like
When the bottom doesn't having the capacity to support standards,
When the bottom near the wall is to be free from traffic,
When upper a part of the wall is under construction.

4. Suspended Scaffolding

In suspended scaffolding, the working platform is suspended from roofs with the assistance of wire ropes or chains etc., it are often raised or lowered to our required level. this sort of scaffolding is employed for repair works, pointing, paintings etc.

5. Trestle Scaffolding

In Trestle scaffolding, the working platform is supported on movable tripods or ladders. this is often generally used for work inside the space , like paintings, repairs etc., up to a height of 5m.

6. Steel Scaffolding

Steel scaffolding is made by steel tubes which are fixed together by steel couplers or fittings. it's very easy to construct or dismantle. it's greater strength, greater durability and better fire resistance. it's not economical but will give more safety for workers. So, it's used extensively nowadays.

7. Patented Scaffolding

Patented scaffolding are made from steel but these are equipped with special couplings and frames etc., these are readymade scaffoldings which are available within the market. during this sort of scaffolding working platform is arranged on brackets which may be adjustable to our required level.
