Taking off Sheet | Taking off in Construction

Taking off sheet and taking off in construction process involves recording dimensions and is referred to as taking off because it involves reading or scaling (taking off) dimensions from a drawing and entering this information in a standard manner on purpose ruled paper called dimension paper or taking off sheet.

A dimension paper also known as a takeoff sheet or measurement sheet is used to enter measurements taken off from an architectural drawing or building plan. The traditional quantity takeoff sheet in the form of A4 paper is widely used at professional learning institutions of quantity surveying, but it’s also used by consulting quantity surveyors, engineers, contractors, and building estimators.

The general measurement sheet used by building contractors and project engineers is quite different from the standard dimension paper used by quantity surveyors. You can obtain this paper at a few selected stores that are still supplying it.



Normally, the taking off sheet is available in A4 size, but it can be wider since it contains more columns than the standard dimension sheet. This sheet has 8 columns while the standard sheet has 5 or fewer columns. A contractor or project engineer can choose between two types of sheets – ruled paper with feint and margins or blank paper with margins and no feint.
